Measuring the Effect of Embedded Games on a Website

Set up a controlled comparison before claiming a lift in engaged time, return visits, page speed, or advertising revenue.

An embedded game gives visitors something to do on the page, but that alone does not prove the page has improved. It can add useful play time, or it can slow the page and distract from the reason people arrived. Treat the embed as a product change and measure it against a version of the page without the game.

Choose the page before choosing the game

  • A dedicated games page is the cleanest case because play is the visitor's stated goal.
  • A casual-content site can use a game that matches the subject of the surrounding page. A football game on a football results site has a clearer role than a random puzzle below an unrelated article.
  • A waiting or completion screen may support a game, but the embed must not obscure the result, download, form confirmation, or next action the visitor came to see.

Define a play before opening analytics

An iframe becoming visible is not a play. Record at least three events: the embed entered the viewport, the player started the game, and the player remained active for a useful interval such as 60 seconds. If the provider exposes a game-start event, use it. Otherwise, keep the measurement honest and label the event as an iframe interaction rather than a confirmed game session.

Run a comparison that you can read

A simple split test is better than comparing this Monday with last month's average. Send comparable visitors to two versions of the same page: one with the embed and one without it. Keep the headline, advertising slots, navigation and traffic source unchanged. Low-traffic sites may need several weeks before the result is stable enough to use.

  • Game start rate: confirmed starts divided by visitors who saw the embed.
  • Engaged play rate: visitors who reached the chosen play-time threshold divided by confirmed starts.
  • Page outcome: newsletter signup, next-page click, purchase or other action the page already exists to produce.
  • Performance: compare Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint and layout movement with the embed enabled and disabled.
  • Revenue per 1,000 page sessions: include the site's own ads and any publisher share from the game; do not substitute raw impression count for revenue.

Read the trade-off, not one flattering number

More time on page is not automatically a win. If play time rises while the page's main conversion falls, the game is competing with the page. If starts are low and performance gets worse, remove or lazy-load the embed. A useful placement raises game starts or revenue without damaging the page's main task.
